We may not be making music as anyone knows it. Fragments of the world, electronically recorded — placed gently, or roughly, into the space. Voices and noise poured into the gaps. We wait for the moment noise becomes harmony.
Intonarumori — the name comes from a noise instrument born in 1913. Built by Luigi Russolo. Wood, cranks, and the will to destroy the boundary between music and non-music. We don’t own that machine. But the question it carried still surrounds us: “Can noise be tuned?”
Can the ordered pulse of technopop be quietly corroded — or fermented — by shifting voices and noise? Even oil paint doesn’t dry. It hardens through oxidation. What appears fixed is still mid-transformation.
We are not after fixation. We are after transformation. No answer comes. So we keep experimenting. That is Intonarumori. We don’t think much about success or failure. Sometimes we dismantle yesterday’s completion with our own hands. Sometimes an unmapped coordinate sleeps inside what others call failure.
As Landauer’s principle shows, the moment we recognize and erase an error, energy is born. Not consumed in correction — but carried forward, as fuel for the next experiment. That is the way of Intonarumori.
Outside voices reach us. But they are no reason to stop. The original noise machine was lost to the flames of war. But the question remained. What lies ahead? Or nothing? Even that is part of the experiment.
Intonarumori, a noise instrument invented in 1913 by the Italian Futurist artist Luigi Russolo (1885-1947), is a prime example of this artistic innovation. The year 1913 indicates that the instrument was not electric. The notion of conceptualizing noise as a musical material predated the subsequent evolution of musique concrète. Since childhood, I have conceptualized noise as a form of music.
It is noteworthy that this designation served as the initial appellation for Gernica. After a period of 44 years, this vision is finally becoming a reality. The project's fundamental principles include the treatment of noise as musical material, the incorporation of the human voice, the embrace of electronic components despite the project's name, and the attainment of a balance between melody and structural integrity.
The core of its music consists of composer/arranger Koji Ueno and lyricist Chikara Yajima (English lyrics). Miyuki Kido, in the way of a cinematic protagonist, handles vocals, mixing, partial arrangement, analog synths, and English lyric writing.
Tr.1 "Nocturne" — Has there ever been a work so pop and beautiful while employing twelve-tone technique? Miyuki Kido's luminous choral work carries within it the instability of an adolescent girl, and a freshness dreaming of maturity.
Tr.2 "Valse" — The vibrant, pop culture of 1920s Europe rendered through cynical lyrics and a rapid triple meter. The analog synth that enters midway unfolds an exhilarating world of dancing and singing within noise.
Tr.3 "Scene de ballet" — An entirely new world of technopop, presented by Intonarumori. A work of singular, overwhelming force. A woman's entire life—through to its final moment—flashes past like a revolving lantern, centered on the symbolic ballet theater of 1920s Paris. Music, lyrics, arrangement, vocals: all intertwined as if by miracle."
"Life is Monochrome." In the liminal time between girlhood and womanhood, caught between hope for oneself, a brilliant future, and reality—there is a moment everyone feels something close to despair. Milk & Honey, Roaring Twenties — Dawn of Les Années Folles!
Cast off the corset, revel in the Charleston. Milk & Honey, Roaring Twenties — Dawn of Les Années Folles!
Scene de ballet — And yet the time comes for a woman to look back with longing on the radiance of her own body. Captivated by the brilliance of a prima donna in an age of frenzy. Yes—she who shone at the heart of Paris is me. She fulfills her life alongside a burning Paris. Will I be forgotten just like this? The last witness to oneself is no one but oneself. In the coffin, she holds her precious life close……
