今回の映画音楽は、能の能楽のようにそもそも固有の音楽を持たない狂言（例外的な演目、狂言小唄などは除く）に固有の音楽があったとしたら？ということと、犬童監督の当初のアイデアだったJazzを多用したロジェ・ヴァデイムの「危険な関係」の映画音楽のスタイル（映画中なんらかのJazzが頻出する）への意識、この二つの着想を基軸に取り組んだ。当初のJazzの多用は制作過程で外された。もしそのアイデアが生きていたとしたら、そうなっていた時の音楽の片鱗はボーナストラックのTr.13 きっといつか "Will Achieve"に現れている。
そうしたことに鑑み、今回は全編で使用する音律を12平均律にしないことにした。これは犬童監督にハリー・パーチの音楽を聴いてもらったところから始まった。ハリー・パーチは純正調に基づく音を1オクターヴ内に43個配置し、その音が出せる楽器も制作した作曲家だ。彼の発明性が大きな支えとなった。今回採用した音律は今のところ秘密にしておきたい。この音律は以前、犬童監督との「夢を与える」で初めて使用した。
また今回は狂言における所作、台詞回し、などが持つタイム感を捉えそれをスタイル化した拍子・リズムパターンを使用した。それをはっきりと認識できるのはTr.06 私は子猿 "It Started with a monkey and ended with a Fox"、Tr.10 六つの顔"Six Faces"であろう。
一つ補足的なことを述べるとTr.05 燃え尽きた家 "Burnt Ruins ~ Regeneration"は、映画においての使用時間は短いものの、空襲で燃え尽きた家から復興して行く過程を様々な角度から捉えた感じということを狙った音楽となっている。

This film score was based on two ideas. First, we asked ourselves, what kind of music could we write for Kyogen? Kyogen is a type of Noh theater. Like Noh, it traditionally doesn't have its own music (except for a few special pieces like Kyogen-kouta). Second, we looked at the style of Roger Vadim's film music for "Dangerous Liaisons". That film often used jazz. This was Director Inudo's original idea. Jazz frequently appears throughout the film. The original plan to use heavy jazz was canceled during production. If that idea had survived, you can hear hints of what the music might have sounded like in the bonus track, Tr. 13,"Will Achieve".
Because of this, we chose not to use 12-tone equal temperament for the whole piece. This decision came about after Director Inudo listened to Harry Partch's music. Harry Partch was a composer who arranged 43 notes based on just intonation within a single octave. He even built instruments capable of producing them. His creativity helped a lot. The tuning system used this time is a secret. I first used this system when I worked with Director Inudo on "Grant a Dream."
I also captured the sense of time in the movements and delivery of lines in kyogen (traditional comic interludes) and used rhythmic patterns derived from it. You can see this best in Tracks 06, "It Started with a Monkey and Ended with a Fox," and 10, "Six Faces."
One more thing to know is that Track 05, "Burnt Ruins ~ Regeneration," is used briefly in the film. The music aims to capture the process of rebuilding from a house burnt down in an air raid, viewed from different angles.
