日本にはアマチュア、プロを含め数多くのジャズのビッグバンドが存在する。またアマチュア、プロを含め数多くの交響楽団が存在する。それはそうと全ての作曲家が自分の名前を冠したオーケストラをもちたいとは思うまい。また“〜and His Orchestra”という言葉は、クラシックではなくジャズのビッグバンドの正式名称か別名である。
このオーケストラは、母体であるKoji Ueno Ensembleに始まり何度かメンバーの入れ替わりや楽器編成の変更を経てかれこれ20年以上存続している。

このオーケストラの特徴は即興性に重点を置かず、上野耕路作品をこの編成で鳴らしてみる、あるいはこの編成に合わせた上野耕路作品を演奏する、という点である。

There are many jazz big bands and classical symphony orchestras in Japan. These can be both amateur and professional in nature construction and performance.
That said, it is undoubtedly rare for composers to want to have an orchestra named after them. Also, the phrase “and His Orchestra” is the official name or alias of a jazz big band, not a symphony orchestra. These orchestras repertoire straddles both worlds (classical and Jazz) and so for that reason, The project is named – Koji Ueno and his orchestra.
The project originally began life as the “Koji Ueno Ensemble”, and has now been in existence for more than 20 years. Through that time it has of course, undergone several changes in both personnel and in instrumentation.
The characteristic of this orchestra is that it does not place An emphasis on improvisation, but rather strives to showcase Ueno’s works in a way that leans toward his love of modernest and hybredized big band Jazz. All of Koji Ueno’s works performed by the orchestra has been adapted to both showcase the dexterity of the individual musicians involved and to highlight the composers ability to modify existing compositions to feeling invoked by such a line up.
